Kelela kicks off June with "point blank," the third single from her upcoming third album, new avatar, arriving July 10th via Warp Records. Produced by Oscar Scheller (known for his work with PinkPantheress), the track follows earlier innovative previews "idea 1" and "linknb" as the album starts to take shape.
Built on drum 'n' bass and UK garage foundations, "point blank" is minimal and intimate, spacey delayed keys and chopped-up breakbeats providing the backdrop for Kelela's layered vocals to navigate difficult emotional territory. The song addresses the exhausting fantasy many invest in: that pouring enough care into a partner will eventually inspire their emotional growth. "The more we pour into men, the more entitled they become," she states plainly!
The single arrives alongside the announcement of Kelela's first full multinational tour in years, new avatar live, spanning North America and Europe this autumn. The North American leg opens September 8th in Seattle before hitting Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Brooklyn, and beyond. The European run follows in October, stopping through Lisbon, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and London, with appearances at San Francisco's Portola Music Festival and Miami's III Points festival.
new avatar features contributions from PinkPantheress, Fousheé, and A.K. Paul, and according to Kelela, the album is about finding solace in confronting harsh truths and using music to make sense of the world rather than escape it. "point blank" embodies that ethos perfectly while also is impossible to look away from.
