MEGGO builds a world of colliding textures on 'eavesdropper ;; the crash' [EP Review]

Meet MEGGO, the Montreal-based alternative folk artist and producer Megan Ennenberg (also of indie rock band FLEECE), who builds songs like collages, weaving together scraps of overheard voices, found sounds, and jagged samples gathered like lucky litter.

MEGGO has just released Part 2 of her eavesdropper trilogy, entitled eavesdropper ;; the crash. The trilogy as a whole traces the process of finding one's voice across shifting roles as an artist, producer, and woman navigating her own opinions, perspective, and taste.

Opening the six-track project is the four-minute-and-thirty-seven-second title track, "the crash," which immediately sets the atmosphere with crunchy ambience, humming, and euphoric textures.

Despite its title, these elements collide softly, placing listeners firmly within MEGGO's immersive sonic world. Just shy of the one-minute mark, the track shifts gears as MEGGO's voice finally emerges. "Let's pick up speed now," she sings, gently summoning the listener to follow along. What begins as a delicate unfolding blossoms into something cinematic, weaving together string arrangements, crashing sounds, and dramatic lyrical imagery.

The third track, "jaws of life," marries acoustic guitar, gentle rhythms, and MEGGO's clean, bright vocals, commanding attention with poignant lyrical moments like "love can build a home" and "there's only now."

Throughout the project, MEGGO demonstrates a remarkable ability to marry texture and lyrical context, allowing her songs to accumulate like pages from a scrapbook. Memories, ideas, and moments from the past and present collide, ultimately shaping what comes next.

Up close and personal, “explosion” brings MEGGO’s vocals intimately into focus, sitting closely within the mix as the track builds around her. The line “explosion was inevitable at that rate” lingers as a defining moment, capturing the song’s sonic collision of bright, chaotic keys that seem to move with a mind of their own.

Horns open and carry through the closing track, “even if you’re happy,” where MEGGO’s layered harmonies take on an intriguing, solemn quality. The track serves as a reflective conclusion, balancing warmth and melancholy while bringing the emotional arc of eavesdropper ;; the crash to a thoughtful close.

Overall, eavesdropper ;; the crash feels like a window into MEGGO’s creative mind, showcasing her ability to bring together textures that seemingly shouldn’t coexist and transform them into something cohesive. There’s a sense of discovery throughout the project, proving that with enough intention and experimentation, even the most unexpected elements can find harmony.

It’s an intriguing chapter in MEGGO’s evolving story, though whether it feels fully realized remains part of the appeal.

As the second installment in a trilogy, eavesdropper ;; the crash feels less like a final statement and more like a snapshot of an artist still exploring, questioning, and shaping her voice. It’s a project that invites listeners into the process rather than presenting a finished destination, leaving anticipation for where the final chapter will take her.
