Vancouver artist Jody Glenham explores post-breakup identity and emotional reset on sun-soaked and easy-going indie track "Love Deficiency Syndrome." Rooted in a steady yet bouncy groove, the track strikes an intricate balance between bittersweet nostalgia and bright forward motion. Encapsulating the relatable post-breakup emergence, the warming track layers synth-tinged guitar and gentle, drawn out chimes with ethereal vocals alongside poignant, resonant songwriting.
Leaning into the melodramatic imagery of how a breakup feels the end of life, the track transforms heartbreak into confident ease as it reminds us that we will be just fine. Sunlit and uplifting, the track feels personal yet relatable, as it meditates on finding yourself after losing love.
Speaking of the track, Glenham says, " I wrote "Love Deficiency Syndrome" with a friend, the artist Georgette, inspired by an article Lena Dunham wrote about a breakup after a long-term relationship. We were drawn to the idea of how, when you're with someone, you take for granted the small things, like always having someone to eat dinner with. The song is full of subtle nods: the opening synth/guitar hook is meant to sound like one of those old, drawn-out doorbells, like you were waiting for your Uber eats to arrive, and the bridge has computer shut down references, mimicking both the autopilot of being in a relationship and the process of making yourself whole again as an individual."
Validating heartache but leaving us with a note of hope and empowerment, Jody Glenham continues to carve out a growing presence with her atmospheric musical signature.
