Following the release of their 2020 singles "Red Run Cold" and "Can't Feel Anything," alt-rock duo World's First Cinema are back with their first 2021 release, "Cold Sets In." Even with a small catalog, the new group have already garnered a rapidly-growing fanbase including a feature on Spotify’s Pop Rock Shot playlist. With this new single off their upcoming debut EP, they look to further establish their presence on the pop-rock scene.
Part of what makes this duo so unique is their approach to production, led by rock connoisseur Fil Thorpe. Just as the name suggests, World's First Cinema bring a theatrical, cinematic element to modern rock. This includes use of classic strings like cellos and piano blended with techno and electronic percussion, making for a grandiose combination of sounds. Add some heavenly pop vocals from John Sinclair and you have a sonic style unlike any other.
"Cold Sets In" opens with striking, extravagant cellos before dissolving into a euphoric piano progression topped with impassioned, candid lyrics. Here, the duo offer a more emotional ballad, as Sinclair reflects on adverse times with themes of togetherness and regrowth. "I hate it when the story ends, but I love to start again." This constant push and pull of emotions permeates throughout the track.
The group also shared their own ideas about the new single: "The song continues on to lyrically explore how pain and strife can bring you closer to loved ones. But even when that pain causes you to step away, we learn that starting over can be the most important part of the journey."
