Last year, UK house-bass artist Midland dropped “Trace,” a sticky and stomping track that earned slot #16 on Resident Advisor’s best 50 of 2013. This year, we get hit with two remixes from legendary tribal techno producer Grain and rising UK house producer Leon Vynehall that carry on the originals' penchant for pounding the dance floor.
Grain, who you may also know as one third of dubstep group Magnetic Man, sends aggressive rapids of texture and hollowed out drums on his rework of “Trace,” turning Midland's distinctive vocal sample into a stuttering batter. Vynehall's “For Yacht Club Use Only (Vynehall’s Port Side Manoeuver 130 Knots Mix)” is both slippery and throttling with busy loops and dub bangs that slide around your head with the whelm of a whirlpool.
Both tracks, out February 10 on AUS Music, are overwhelming in all the right ways.
