It seems that Mississippi's Big K.R.I.T. has grown tired of being viewed as solely an underground artist. While most critics and fans would acknowledge that he is one of the most innovative emcees in the game, among the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Joey Bada$$, but his relative lack of fanfare, especially compared to his peers, has created a distance between himself and the mainstream. With the upcoming release of his sixth album, Cadillactica, due out sometime this year, K.R.I.T. has made it apparent that he is no longer satisfied playing second fiddle or relegated to certain niche demographics.
"Mt. Olympus" features an uncharacteristically fiery and defiant K.R.I.T, confidently confronting all of the cons and those looking to capitalize off of Southern culture. Typically laid back, this is a track doesn't have the same cruising in a 64' Chevy vibe we have come to expect from the emcee. It is a lyrical barrage, a rant set to superb hip hop production, and ultimately, an outlet for his frustration. Lucky for listeners, he doesn't lose any of his country flow in his frustration.
The accompanying video is quite straight forward, which captures the mood without diluting it through flashing lights and scores of champagne bottles. K.R.I.T. and his rapidly transforming shadow are the two stars of the four minute long clip; each forcing the viewers to focus on their slick moves. While he looks totally normal, a quality that may turn off some, his words and attitude make him look larger than life. Its simplicity and minimalist approach give the visuals a stronger impact that will resonate in onlookers minds for sometime after it goes off.
Cadillactica is shaping up to be a big record, possibly one of the best this year. K.R.I.T. continues to get better and better, his consistency is admirable and makes us fans of his stuff. If "Mt. Olympus" is an example of things to come, we can't wait to hear more and see where he goes next.
