MyMind – At Night [EP]

You may have seen MyMind’s tracks posted on the weekly Wobble Wednesday column. He recently released an entire EP via Muopia Records entitled At Night, and it really takes future garage to the next level. The dissonance, the rolling bass lines  and the sheer emotion it evokes are enough to put this one on the map. Even the darker tracks like “Purple Deapth” and “DubStab” have an upbeat feeling to them.

Most electronic music EPs feature several tracks that hit different ends of a particular genre. Not this one. In terms of flow, At Night is one of those albums you need to listen to from start to finish. Burn a copy of it on a CD, plug it in to your AUX in the car, or just thrown on a set of cans and set it on repeat. You won’t even realize how many times it’s looped.

The first track, “At Night”, starts off with a 007 sound, focusing on those sharps and flats to establish a unique melody. After the intro, a bubbling bass line picks your spirit right up. The reverb on the claps and snares add to the darkness commonly associated with garage tunes.

Moving on to “Keep Moving On”. The vocal transposition and sample loops in this track are great, but that goes without saying. Take any lyric, let’s say “Thong Song”, pitch it down, and you’ve got gold. It’s as if Barry White is telling you how much he loves to see that booty go. Who wouldn’t want that? Artists like James Blake and Gil Scott-Heron know exactly what I’m talking about.

While it’s hard not to love an album that flows naturally, such compilations run the risk of becoming stale, and the individual tracks may go unnoticed. That’s not to say the songs lack originality. Rather, it becomes difficult to say things like, “Oh yeah, that one track on At Night was so dope!" or "Can’t wait for the remix!” Not a big issue, but something for all you budding producers to consider.

If you’re in the mood to just throw on your headphones and zone into work/studies/reading, this EP is for you. If you’re one of the few that gets outrageously pumped for future garage tunes, then by all means blast this one to the high heavens. Either way, grab the EP now on Beatport.
