London-raised, Los Angeles-based producer, multi-instrumentalist, and film composer Reza Safinia delivers an urgent plea for humanity amid escalating warfare and cruelty with "Watching from the Wings," a deliberately tense number led by driving basslines, haunting cello and bare kick drums. Vulnerable and exposed, the track weaves a profoundly aching lyrical narrative that alludes to the 2026 Iran War.
With raw lyricism underpinned by pulsing beats and the melancholy swell of cellos, the track builds with a careful rhythm to reveal the heartache embedded beneath. Written in the shadow of the ongoing fight for freedom in Iran, the emotional core of the track harkens back into Safinia's childhood, digging into the guilt of leaving as a child, unravelling the murky mix of survivor's guilt and the comfort of distance. Having left Iran at the age of five, Safinia's reflections on distance, identity and the feelings within it strikes a chord for its absolute honesty and intimacy.
Speaking of the track, he says, "When this war broke out, it really hit me in an unexpected way. It brought up a lot of memories for me. It also made me feel so much for the people of that country. And yet, at the same time, I feel like I don't deserve to have feelings because they are suffering so much. And I'm not one of them anymore."
Led by poignant lyrics that come straight from his heart, the track was a last minute addition to his forthcoming new album, 1/∞, which is set to offer a sprawling exploration of the intense polarities that shape modern life. With a distinct identity rooted in a experimental blend of pop, hip-hop, and underground electronic, Reza Safinia crosses the boundaries of genres and emotions with a tenderness that evokes immediate connection.
