Grammy-winning drummer and Snarky Puppy alum Larnell Lewis blends jazz fusion, Afro-Caribbean grooves, Brazilian rhythms, and R&B on third solo album Slice of Life, which delivers an intimate reflection on family, growth, and human connection.

Led by intricate rhythms and heartfelt storytelling, the album serves as a poignant reminder of life’s interconnectedness, brimming with thoughtful messages of self-acceptance, perseverance, and gratitude.

From delicate and deeply moving tribute to a child lost to miscarriage on sorrow-tinged yet hopeful “Little Butterfly,” with ethereal and uplifting vocals by Joanna Majoko, to heartfelt ballad “All the Stars” featuring Wade O. Brown, the album is stocked full of collaborations including Lewis’ wife steelpan virtuoso Joy Lapps. One such charming feature comes from Lewis’ daughter Kaya, on opening track “Hide and Seek,” adding a sense of innocence to elevate the layered beats of the track. Finally, Lewis’ showcases his mesmerizing skill as a drummer with solo piece “Hiding Place,” which offers up a  meditative yet powerful narrative of reflection and resilience.

Speaking of the core message of the album, Lewis says,  "You have everything you need to do what you are destined to do. You are living an experience that is intertwined with many around you and you are not alone. Learn to pace yourself, face yourself, and love yourself.”

Designed as a conversation between Lewis and his future self, the album is intensely personable yet resonant as it leaves us feeling empowered and hopeful across each note. A seasoned professor at Humber College and a globally respected musician, Larnell Lewis continues to be a visionary artist who wears his heart on his sleeve.
