Tokyo-based progressive pop quartet ATARASHII GAKKO! continue to redefine what it means to be a girl group in J-Pop with their latest track “Tokyo Calling,” an doomsday anthem that  captures the harsh realities of daily life before soaring to a triumphant and euphoric finish.

Rooted in their classic ability to infuse courage and raw energy into each beat of their catchy musicality, ATARASHII GAKKO! offer up yet another aural treat that works like magic for a live audience even as they venture into new sonic territories.

The track is accompanied by hypnotic visuals directed by Pennacky, that depicts the four-piece in a gigantic form, on a mission to rescue Tokyo citizens from the negativity of monotony, prevailing as the saviours who lead people from all walks of life to a high-energy gathering where they escape the dullness of their lives.

In conversation with Earmilk, the explosive four-piece delve into how their sound has evolved, on transcending language barriers to strike a chord with music lovers all over the world, their favourite part of touring and so much more.

1.What’s the message/inspiration behind “Tokyo Calling”?

"Tokyo Calling" is our anthem to ignite passion and excitement in everyone! Starting from the heartbeats of Tokyo, our home, and echoing out to the entire world! Sometimes, life can feel a bit like a loop, but we're here to remind everyone to seize the day, chase those dreams, and dance through every moment. Remember: Life's an adventure, so make it unforgettable!
2.How would you say your sound has evolved over time?

Oh, what a journey! Initially, our beats were like a love letter to our Japanese fans. But as we've expanded our horizons, our music started grooving to global rhythms! Music is our universal language, and we're always in the mood to mix it up. It's a never-ending party of evolution with us!

3. Tell me a bit about the music video for the track and the creative process behind it?

"Tokyo Calling" MV? TOTAL BLAST! We dipped into that retro Showa vibe and added a splash of tokusatsu fun! And guess what? We teamed up with Pennacky again, the genius behind our "NAINAINAI" video! We're like superhero schoolgirls in this one – showing that even in everyday life, there's potential to inspire and spread positivity.

4. Personally, what’s the most rewarding part of the music making process and what’s the most challenging part?

Absolute magic? When our beats and dance moves meld into a masterpiece! Movement and music are inseparable twins for us! Now, weaving our Japanese lyrics to touch global hearts? That's a challenge! But guess what? It’s also the sweetest reward. Transcending language with music and moves? Priceless.

5. You’re about to head off on your first-ever North American tour. What are your expectations and hopes as you embark on this exciting experience?

Electric!  It's all about feeling that live energy with our fans! No set expectations – we’re just set to soak up every adventure and new city vibe. Every cheer, every clap? It supercharges our youthful zest, representing all the bright-eyed dreamers out there!

6.What’s the best part of touring besides getting to perform and meet your fans?

Local supermarket raids! It's a blast discovering new snacks, especially sushi rolls with twists we'd never imagine back home! Sushi with a local flavor? Sign us up!

7.What are some bucket list destinations you’d love to tour/perform at in the future?

Oh, everywhere! Our dream? Light up stages across the globe and dance with fans from every corner! After all, connecting heart-to-heart? That's what being entertainers is all about!

8.Who inspires you both professionally and on a personal level?

While there are countless artists that light up our playlists, the real magic happens within our squad. We challenge, support, and inspire each other every step of the way. Together, we're more than the sum of our parts.

9.If you could describe ATARASHII GAKKO!’s current artistry in 3 words, what would they be and why?

ATARASHII GAKKO! in three words: Vibrant [Genki]. Authentic Youth [Seishun]. Boundary-pushing [Hamidashiteiku]. We strive to stay vibrant in our energy, authentic in our messaging, and always pushing boundaries with our art.

10.Finally, what’s one question no one has asked you in an interview you wish you were asked?

"If ATARASHII GAKKO! were to teach a subject at a 'new school,' what would it be and why?" We would teach a course on embracing individuality, understanding the importance of roots, and pushing boundaries to create something unique in life.
