Richard Jahn welcomes you to the "Private Members Club" [Video]

In a sprawling musical world where artists walk the line between wearing their influences on their sleeves and use mimicry to coast off their successes, the rise of the outlier can only lead to a truly engaging story. Amongst the soundalikes and lookalikes, outsteps a remarkable antithesis, London-based singer-songwriter and self-revelling oddball Richard Jahn.

Four years ago, he started turning his small creative ripples into waves before inexplicable disappearing into relative obscurity. "It wasn't a purposeful hiatus," notes Jahn in an email statement. "And not that anyone particularly noticed, but I just had some stuff I wanted to work on." The "stuff" he refers to was all manner of endeavours, including hand-building a recording studio in the British countryside that was the birthplace of his secondary debut, "Private Members Club," which he now welcomes you to, and as the video description details, "Please dress appropriately for the Private Members Club."

Seconds in and both the pulsing beat and club-focused visual points the track in all manner of directions. As the washed-out guitars and distinctly throwback and nothing short of iconic vocal sweeps in, the mesmeric flair becomes dutifully apparent. His dusky croons and bold moves apply a mesmeric tone to a thus far, relatively sparsely produced instrumentation. His poignant lyricism drops one memorable line after another, crafting a timeless commentary on themes of modern life, status and class. “I suppose I have a penchant for modern crooneristic tendencies and I want to reflect, and discuss, the strange times we are living in – that's really my goal with songwriting," continues Jahn.

At the midway point, we see the track reach a new plateau with a blood-pumping instrumental passage, fuelled by buzzing guitars, hard-hitting brass and atypical rhythms. Dynamically urging more attention to the lower energy verses, Jahn takes us through the motions once again, only to further exceed expectations with the raucous instrumental climax which supersedes the thrill delivered by the aforementioned passage.

With a return this strong, it's all eyes on Jahn for wherever his creativity takes him next.
