For someone as prominent in the U.K. music scene as Oscar Jerome, it’s difficult to believe that we’re still waiting on his debut album. The South London guitarist and singer who already has an impressive catalogue of music as a solo artist and as a part of the group KOKOROKO, now appears ready to take the next step in his artistic trajectory. Along with releasing the new single “Your Saint,” Jerome has also announced the impending arrival of his debut album Breathe Deep, which will be out July 10 on Caroline International. While news of the upcoming project would be enough to get listeners excited, the lead single that features lyricist Brother Portrait as well as a stunning animation from Zack Bottoni, should take the buzz to new heights.
While Jerome describes Breathe Deep in a press release as, “A pretty broad presentation of who I am musically and my journey to get to this point,” the LP will also feature political commentary sprinkled through the set list. “Your Saint” is one such moment, as Jerome addresses the objectionable treatment of refugees by Western European nations that claim to welcome and help those in need. With help from some of Jerome’s KOKOROKO band mates, the afrobeat-leaning style of the track provides a lively and gripping musical foundation for his and Brother Portrait’s poignant words and striking melodies. It’s well known at this point that Oscar Jerome is an incredible talent with a knack for absorbing grooves and arresting lyrics, and “Your Saint” shows further proof that his upcoming LP will be one to remember.
