iyla wades straight into the deep end on "Corset." Producer and arranger Kadis and iyla build the beat out of shadows and old ghosts—a chorus of voices that feels ancient, cracked open by drums that hit with a cold edge. You get glass bottle percussion pinging in the black, cowbells flashing on and off, bass samples rumbling below—the whole thing wound up tight enough to snap.
Her vocals meet the beat head-on: bold, clear, every line pulled tight. She moves from sing-speak cadence to high-wire, operatic stretches, throwing her whole weight behind every word. The delivery is all muscle and nerve, direct but wounded, turning a toxic pull into a parting shot.
She paints the rules in lipstick and laces the lyrics with star signs. Seduction and self-protection bump shoulders and twist up in lines like "You know I need my time/I’m a Taurus, the sun is rising/ Moon and Scorpio, just read the signs." And later on, closure gets dressed as a lullaby when she delivers "You’re too tight, skin tight/ Untied, goodbye/ I might kiss you good-good night/ And sing you a lullaby."
"Corset" stands tall – armor on and all soft edges hidden. Desires may be pressed up behind a barricade and iyla's ice cold air—but that can change if her mood shifts. And at that point, all bets are off.
