Leeds-based, Irish musician Far Caspian (aka Joel Johnston) has released his latest single “First Day”.
A nostalgic and heartfelt love song, “First Day” opens up with bright, rhythmic guitars alongside a simple and steady drumbeat, all accompanied by a music video featuring a fish-eye lens view of residential houses, flat blocks, building construction and rainy parks.
According to Far Caspian, the song was written about his relationship with his partner ‘as a reminder of how we have each other’s backs and best interests at heart’. He said: I wrote ‘First Day’ one morning after dropping my partner off at her new job. She was in a transitional period where everything felt so daunting and raw. At a similar time, I was starting a new medication for my Crohn’s disease that required me to go to the hospital and get infusions every 8 weeks’.
This sense of feeling hopeful despite difficult circumstances comes across in the steady rhythm of “First Day”, feeling a little bit like the motion of simply walking forward and continuing on. The lyrics dive deep into mental health, recovery, forgiveness and gratitude, much like the rest of Far Caspian’s upcoming album. According to the artist himself, he ‘wanted to make a record that was a bit more heard – I even made my vocals louder than I usually do’.
Far Caspian will also be heading off on a tour of the UK, EU and US later this year, starting in Dublin on September 8th. He will be touring his upcoming album, Autofiction, which will be released on July 25th via Far Caspian’s own Tiny Library Records.
