Cameron and the Slumberknights captures the nostalgia of our 20s in “Summer Rains,” weaving a vivid tapestry Cameron Donald’s childhood with a moody lo-fi rap musicality. Built on gloomy electric pianos and guitars, the intricate track comes alive with candid and relatable storytelling that harkens to the wistfulness of youth.
Littered with pangs of nostalgia, the reflective track is rooted in a bittersweet feel as it offers us an escape into the solace of our innocence, offering a reminder of the “good old days.”
Delving into the inspiration behind the track, Donald says, I have very vivid memories of riding around the neighbourhood on my bike – sometimes me and my friends would be on our adventures, but other times I’d be listening to something like Relapse, Recovery or Thank Me Later, enjoying the English summer. Those summers, when I’d rush out the door as soon as the showers stopped, whilst the rainbows were still reaching, and hit the wet tarmac with screeching tires, will always be an escape for me. The smell of rain on the pavement – petrichor – always makes me feel that little bit better about growing up.”
The quartet consisting of Donald, Jim “Creature.” Cornelissen, Ben Thomson and Dan Collins, have been gracing our ears with vibe-laden, bittersweet nostalgia since their formation in 2019. Now after a period of introspection, they emerge and enter into a new sonic era.
