Walking toward the light: Dominique Fils-Aimé’s journey through 'My World Is The Sun' [Interview]

As she unveils My World Is The Sun, the second chapter in her unfolding trilogy, Dominique Fils-Aimé invites listeners deeper into a journey rooted in authenticity, vulnerability, and spiritual renewal. Following the introspective foundations laid by Our Roots Run Deep, this new body of work expands both emotionally and sonically, shifting from the image of a tree nourished by light to an immersion in the source itself. Where the first chapter explored grounding and ancestry, this installment radiates outward, examining humanity as both receivers and generators of love, frequency, and creative force.

At its core, My World Is The Sun is a meditation on freedom: freedom to feel, to play, to create without confinement. Blending jazz, soul, and blues with an intuitive resistance to formula, the album embraces the beauty of imperfection and the aliveness of the present moment. Recorded with a deep trust in live musicianship and emotional honesty, it values essence over polish, capturing the rawness of a musical diary in motion. Vulnerability becomes strength here, as Fils-Aimé reconnects with her inner child and reclaims creativity as play rather than performance.

In conversation with Earmilk, Dominique Fils-Aimé reflects on transformation, the symbolism of the phoenix, and the delicate balance between structure and instinct. She speaks of creating safe spaces, internally and collectively, where artistic truth can flourish, and of building continuous visual and sonic narratives that mirror life’s dualities: fire and water, structure and flow, renewal and healing.

My World Is The Sun is the second installment in your trilogy. How does this chapter differ emotionally and sonically from Our Roots Run Deep?

From Our Roots Run Deep to My World Is The Sun resides echoes of my everlasting quest for proximity, authenticity and transparency. The desire to contribute to peace of mind on an individual level for I believe it may later trickle down and spread into our social fabric. From the Tree being fed by light to that Life source that is the Sun, an exploration of our humanity from two complementary perspectives: humans as receivers and generators of that light and frequency.

Love, the ultimate Soul food.

Emotionally there is the discomfort and relief of being more vulnerable every time through this musical diary reflecting my personal journey and hopes for the world, one trilogy chapter at a time. Sonically there is the freedom of playing live with the bandmates, prioritizing the essence of a moment over the quest for the ‘’perfect take.’.

The beauty of human imperfection, making it perfectly human.

You describe this album as focusing on the essence of the creative process. What did you discover about yourself while making it?

More than discovering, I got reminded of the cycle; As kids we Know but conditioning made me doubt, then forget. Eventually I remember to believe. Belief turns back into Knowing. Wanting to create from the most authentic place possible meant observing which parts of me I was not being honest about: looking for my “Truest self” led me back to childhood.

I got to admit out loud, to myself and others, that I don’t want to work. I want to play, I want to feel, I want to connect. I discovered that although my inner child is not socially accepted everywhere, it is still my right and my desire to bring them everywhere I go.

The creative process also evokes that, as we fight for Freedom on a larger scale, we hold the power to free ourselves from imaginary limitations whenever we want.

Themes of freedom, vulnerability, and spiritual growth are central to this project. How did you create a safe space for yourself to explore those ideas honestly?

The first safe space I need to create is my head.

My state of mind becomes the warm and welcoming home I comfortably sync in like we do in a fluffy couch. A judgement free zone, less thinking, more being.

Being surrounded by caring and open minded souls makes the process so much richer and more enjoyable. We get to explore and build a sonic experience that is filled with their kindness and curiosity.

We play. We feel. Together.

The album blends jazz, soul, and blues while avoiding formulaic arrangements. How do you balance structure with intuitive expression?

I believe the balance between structure and intuition lies in focusing on intuition solely. Since society has already instilled structure in me, the goal is to give intuition and instinct all the space I can. It is aligned with the quest for creative freedom (which is the first principle of Jazz in my book), while accepting the formatting that is engraved in some of our ways.

The phoenix symbolizes renewal and transformation. What personal transformations inspired this track?

Renewal can come from reconnection to our former selves. Reconnecting and leaving more space to my inner child. Being the same but always different since every cell of our body is in constant revolution, therefore leaving us in constant renewal. Freer than ever, more hopeful in order to counter the general despair. Creating space within me to welcome the dualities and pluralities that make us whole instead of trying to shrink myself in a digestible format. Accepting that it might lead to judgement and being misunderstood. Accepting that it is none of my business and out of my control.

The visual piece combines “Phoenix Rising” (directed by Vladim Vilain) and “The River” (directed by Miryam Charles). Why was it important to present these songs within a continuous narrative?

Phoenix Rising and The River. Fire and Water Renewal and Healing.

Vladim and Myriam, masculine and feminine Energy: he creates in structured lines, she flows and follows Energy. Both passionate, kind and talented Souls, they are the same while being opposite which makes them complementary. Just like many themes in this album.

I wish for the album to be received and listened to as a continuous art work. The same way we read a book without skipping from chapter 3 to chapter 7. Having these two songs coexisting within one visual creative space is a symbol of this hope.

How does the visual storytelling deepen the album’s overarching themes?

Being able to collaborate with visual Artists, or any other type of Artist for that matter allows richer universes. Catering to other senses can only deepen the experience. To build a physical, visible world around the auditory frequencies is like making a house in which people can sit to listen to the music.

You’ve performed at major festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival. How do international audiences respond differently to your music?

By getting the privilege of playing in so many different countries, I noticed how alike we all are, regardless of location. Sure, cultures and sceneries may change but the core remains the same, a show is still a gathering of Souls going through the human experience and looking for connection. The same set of emotions was dealt to us all. We cry the same tears made from the same water that has been on this earth for thousands of years.

You’ve spoken about crafting your work in trilogies. Do you already envision how this current trilogy will conclude?

Since my goal for this trilogy is to let life guide me, for each chapter to be a reflection of me and my personal evolution. Only time will tell. I am excited to know too. The only thing I know that can never change is the Love I wish to communicate and the Hope I wish to keep alive. Stay Tuned! :)

With a 2026 world tour ahead, including performances in Paris and Brussels — what do you hope audiences take away from experiencing My World Is The Sun live?

I always hope the audience takes away whatever they need from the moment we offer. Many emotions and possibilities are present and I wish for them to find the one that feeds their soul. I hope the experience brings them the reminder that although we are responsible for our own peace of mind, We remain connected and influenced by everything around us. We are never alone.

If listeners walk away from this album with one feeling or realization, what would you want it to be?

May they feel the randomness of a stranger sending them unconditional Love from afar through an album, Music is the healer, music is the reminder, Music is a connector. Music is a tool for personal and global revolution.

Music is freedom.
We are the Music and the Musicians.
We are the Love as much as we are Loved.
