Tropez redefines retro-futurism with ‘Thinkin Bout You’ [Video]

The boundary-pushing multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Tropez is back with an electrifying single and music video that leaves nothing to the imagination. Co-produced and mixed by GRAMMY® Award-winner Ben Allen III (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), 'Thinkin Bout You' is a wavy dive into producer Tropez‘s brand of synth-wave, funk, R&B and disco featuring nostalgic vibes with futuristic flair.

At its heart, 'Thinkin Bout You' is more than just a standard love song and has details of sci-fi that touch on the themes of digital consciousness constructed memories. Inspired by touchstones as diverse as The Matrix and a recent Black Mirror installment called “San Junipero,” the track projects a near future where a long-lost flame can be digitally implanted if you desire it badly enough, resulting in something both menacing and lovely, with plenty of food for thought. While the lyrics may have an ambiguous feel, they are fragmented enough to function as a blank canvas for audiences to take in or interpret their own.

The Christopher Hill-directed music video plays out this vision of the future. Mixing surrealistic, synthetic visuals with organic and homey feelings, the video balances themes of love and memory with fast-paced, progressive editing that feels as retro as it is futuristic. The music has a sonically meandering feel, and as the video unfolds, it follows suit in an incredibly cinematic way.

In the era of genre-blending, 'Thinkin Bout You' is an indie-pop record that shines through with Tropez's unique sound and Allen's well-matched production. This spellbinding track is the first taste of Tropez's debut album, which promises more of his unique blend of sounds and styles.

It also happens to be an escape, and the brilliance of 'Thinkin Bout You' comes down to whether you are attracted to its infectious groove, conceptual depth, or gorgeous visuals.
