Rising musician Banshee tackles themes of predatory behaviour and misogyny on new album Birth Of Venus, a seven-track collection of empowering EDM anthems that aim to be a voice for women’s safety at clubs and shows.
Opening with the sultry and groovy stylings of “Get Me Out Of This Club,” led by his wispy and glitchy vocals peeking through punchy beats, the projects sets a bold mood right from the outset.
The foreboding feel of “Men Are Trash,” with screeching backing vocals layering over haunting melodies is a powerful callout to men to stop blaming women for their violence, the brash and gritty “YES ALL MEN,” compliments this rumination on misogyny with its fierce delivery.
Interspersed with laid-back dance anthem ‘Do I Really Scare You,” and the groove-laden “Take Me To The Oceanside,” as well as the soaring title track, the album is a perfect showcase of her sonic versality.
Final track “I Feel Safe With You,” ends on a punchy note that echoes with every second as booming beats with whispers of vocals make for a hypnotic final note.
As someone who experienced abuse and sexual assault while playing in bands in her local music scene, the album has a personal meaning to musician Rachel Knight who under her musical moniker has delivered a reflective collection of music that strikes a chord with women everywhere.
