Southern California based synth pop meets electronic singer, songwriter and producer The New Division has just shared his latest single "Modern Life". The song is the title track to his newly released 10-track album.
With "Modern Life", The New Division explores many of today's problems including social media addiction and the need to succeed, which can often be detrimental to one's mental health and privacy. The single relays the inability to stop following the urge to achieve money and fame despite the consequences, with lyrics including, "why couldn't you keep your will disguised / unadvertised / bring on the age of compromise / a half past life." Sonically, "Modern Life" is a hauntingly beautiful synth pop affair complete with kaleidoscopic guitars, fuzzy synths and explosive basslines. A soaring, addictive chorus, The New Division sings "still coming back to modern life" in a ferocious fervor rarely heard in electronic music. The music video shows snippets of otherworldly figures in fluorescent lights against a pitch black backdrop for an enthralling watch.
The New Division was founded by John Kunkel in his Californian dorm room in the early 2000s. In 2009, he released his first EP, The Rookie EP which quickly solidified him as an artist to watch. Releasing a large body of music since then and touring with the likes of Peter Murphy, Shout Out Louds, Minus the Bear, and more, The New Division has had a vast career attracting a fervent fan base across the globe. With his latest album, the songwriter has shared a darker yet important narrative of living with chaos, loss and isolation. Check out "Modern Life" now and remember to sometimes live in the present moment away from technology.
