British indie pop artist Natalie Shay is known for her infectious, dance-worthy anthems that touch on relatable themes for listeners in their twenties. Her first single of 2023 stays true to this, while also bringing light to something that isn’t often spoken about in pop hits.

“The Edge” narrates the breakdown of a friendship, more specifically one between Shay and her best friend. It isn’t easy saying goodbye to someone who has played a big part in your life and whom you share happy memories with, however with the good comes the bad and overtime, Shay knew that this friendship was no longer healthy.

It isn’t until we reflect on the past that our vision becomes clear and we can understand things for what they really were. The artist shares, “Despite missing her and the good parts of the friendship so much, I know in order to still respect myself, I have to honour the power of an apology, and in this case, the lack there of one.”

For a song with such a somber theme, sonically “The Edge” is upbeat and bold, featuring jangly guitars, twinkling synths and emotion-fueled vocals that soar brightly atop the move-inducing beat. In classic Natalie Shay style she succeeds again and we’re certain this track is going to be on your 2023 playlists for a long time!
