Emerging singer-songwriter Nalan's new single "Only Birds Can Tell" is a heartfelt and solemn ode to the loved ones we lost and thinner workings of emotions that follow suit. Bolstered by a dynamic and ominous guitar-laden backdrop courtesy of Walter p99 Arkestra, Nalan digs deep into the dark crevices in the soul and pulls out the pain and conflict felt after experiencing loss. Her airy vocals engulf the track with a mantra-like aura as she runs through the swirling emotions with lines like "I see you when I sleep/cruising in my dreams, hear you when I sit down upon a hill" and ultimately finds a balance so as not to fall deep in despair.
The visuals by Sylvie Weber have a cryptic and ominous aesthetic that explores the interactions between the world as we know it and that of the spiritual plane. It is filled with more than a handful of motifs ranging from despair, loneliness, helplessness, and the search for the inner strength to stay out of the doldrums.
"Only Birds Can Tell" is taken from Nalan's recently released debut album I'm Good. The Crying Tape., a project that is based on her childhood experiences and was recorded during the lockdown in Berlin. Nalan (fka slimgirl fat) is a member of the trio Gaddafi Gals.
