Zach Zoya's "Understand" is stunning R&B gold

Dynamic vocalist Zach Zoya has just unveiled a dreamy new single “Understand,” a sensual hip-hop crossover jam that explores the bittersweet thrill of uncertainty. The fresh track follows up the sultry crooner “Feelings” from June 6, an effort that fittingly soundtracks your post-COVID summer fling. Zoya has kept his foot on the gas since his glamorous 2020 EP Spectrum, as his recent output of singles shows he still has fresh ideas and strong vocal performances to deliver.  Looking ahead to a new EP this fall, “Understand” is yet another step in the right direction, as the Montreal wordsmith expands his vocal versatility even further without compromising a cohesive and infectious listen. It’s as gorgeous and silky smooth as any R&B hit on the market right now.

“Understand” is backed by a hard hitting, intimate instrumental that features a flickering guitar sample and thumping 808s. There’s also a distorted horn sample in the final chorus that brings a gorgeous celebratory tone to the track’s close. It’s an excellent soundscape for Zach Zoya to operate over; it's warm enough to support the high vocal runs but still sharp enough for his bars to weave in and out of. His ability to handle each dynamic leg of the song with such ease is impressive to say the least. He can switch from the sexy sung hook to the cutting edge verses in the blink of an eye with equal comfort in each lane. In a hip-hop landscape with increasing amounts of boy bands and group efforts, Zach Zoya is able to deliver the full package all on his own. He has a delightful balance of raw vocal talent and intangible knack for rhythm and melody, rendering a calculated take on a visceral sound. It’s truly stunning when it all comes together.
