Following the success of "raw" that dropped earlier this year, Canadian artist LOONY now enlists Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins for new single royal flush, marking her second release for 2021.
The new single with also feature on her forthcoming EP soft thing, set to release in June. Encapsulating a myriad of genres spanning rnb, neo-soul, electronic, jazz and hip-hop, "royal flush" weaves intricate strings and melodic chords. Meanwhile, LOONY’s grooving vocals and Jenkins' effortless flow explores the flourishing spark between two lovers whilst feeling a lingering uncertainty about progressing to the next stage of their relationship. Mick Jenkins shares, “I play poker regularly so as soon as I saw the title I went for it. It was a fun verse to write. I love conceptually tying in one metaphor and being able to litter it all through the verse.”
LOONY explains, "royal flush is the stage before ‘be cool’. You know that period of time when you’re feeling someone, and you’re pretty sure they’re feeling you too? It's like, I feel like we both have a winning hand here and if we play it, the world could be ours, but we’re both not ready yet. There's also an element of okay great, if you’re not ready to do it yet with your chest, with your whole heart, it’s best that we don’t start this brand-new thing yet. Don’t play face down with me. When you’re serious, you’ll show me, and it’ll be great."
Continuing to drip-feed soul drenched cuts before her highly anticipated debut project in June, "royal flush" follows the success of "raw" and "be cool" that has seen LOONY find fans in Sir Elton John and Ebro Darden. Rapidly on the rise beyond her hometown of Toronto, LOONY’s soft thing EP will mark only the beginning of her flourishing journey, showcasing her range and ability to its full potential.
