Singer and producer Johnny Burgos follows up his debut EP Love Through It All with his new full-length project Gone Into the Grey. The 15 track body of work sees him finding purpose and embracing the grey areas of life in these crazy times. Although he started working on the project before the pandemic, the turn of events allowed him to dive deeper into the theme as he was forced to work remotely. Features on the project include instrumentalists such as Jonny Tobin on Synths Devaughn Denegall on Bass (Ty Dolla Sign), Keenan McRae on Guitar, as well as Gil "XL" Defay on horns.
The project opens up with the self-examining record "These hands" where Burgos acknowledged his flaws and how he overcame them. This is followed by the funky "All Outta Fucks" that literally embodies the sentiment. Burgos delivers a smooth and somewhat carefree melodic performance and throws the middle finger to critics who try to sway his perspective. Cuts like "Summer wave" and "Fun Tonight" are collaborations with rapper Leo Coltrane and guitarist Yellow Shoots respectively and provide bright spots on the project. The former has an MJ-esque ethereal vibe while the former is more upbeat. For the most part, Burgos really carries the project on his own with commanding vocal presence, sultry alluring melodies, and a knack for fusing multiple genres in a seamless fashion. He gives the listener a full range of emotions from loss, love, passion, and some feel-good tunes to balance things out.
