Amsterdam’s rising singer-songwriter Joya Mooi has released a new EP Blossom Carefully. The EP comes right after her last single "Good Girl" which was released some months ago. The six-track body of work sees her collaborating with producers Sim Fane, Blazehoven, and SIROJ who craft a wide variety of soundscapes ranging from future-soul, hip-hop, and more.
The project opens up with the title track, a lush dreamy track that showcases Mooi's sublime vocals that swirl around the ears like a gripping mantra. Filled with emotions and a whole lot of confidence, Mooi explores her persona with the intention to clear all doubts. The next track is the single "Bitter Parts" where she comes to terms with her imperfections over Sim Fane's bouncy, trap-inspired instrumental. "Hold You Tight" was Mooi’s first release of 2020, and flows in nicely with its soft piano progressions, groovy drums, and of course a solid sublime performance. "More Than Ever" sees Mooi teaming up again with producer Sim Fane who laces her with an engulfing production rife with atmospheric sequences and synths over thumping drums.
Blossom Carefully is for a lack of a better word carefully crafted and while it is laced with stories around freedom, identity, and hope it also carries weight with the production and sound. Mooi has the vocal department on lock but her ear for sound is not to be overlooked as she strives for variety and uniqueness with her approach. From the edgy rebellious mood of "Good Girl" to the unfiltered sincerity on "Hour Left," Mooi really brings a full spectrum of emotions to the forefront.
