Virtuosic multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and recording artist McClenney has released "Karma Plays," the fourth taste from his forthcoming project. Chris McClenney's comfort in inhabiting funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop, and R&B elements displayed both in his debut project, 2017's Portrait in Two, and also his co-writing and producing efforts for artists like Khalid, H.E.R., Wale, and Flatbush Zombies have won him a Grammy nomination and the cosign of mentor, Quincy Jones. In addition to his efforts in the studio, McClenney was also a major player in removing the 'urban' label from the Grammy's.
In describing the thought process behind "Karma Plays," Chris remarked, "The song is a cautionary tale. 'Karma pays you in change' to me means: the only way you can expect different results or a karmic shift is by making changes in your life." McClenney utilizes a slow burning, introspective blend of funk and R&B to consider cosmic justice. Beautiful, rippling piano merges with a tender vocal offering to create an immersive, calm space. The track is blessed by Baby Rose and her timeless, Nina Simone-esque vocal tremors.
"Karma Plays" as well as the other three singles from his forthcoming project, "Get Back," "Trip," and "Black Betty White" featuring Erick the Architect are available now via Haven. The project is currently without a release date, but you can check out his sound kit which is currently for sale as well as his feature in Chika's NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
