Atlanta's very own R&B star 6LACK is back with a new EP to add to your summer playlist, aptly titled 6pc Hot. The project comes nearly two years after the release of his breakout album, East Atlanta Love Letter, which featured hits like "Pretty Little Fears" with J.Cole and the lead single, "Switch." This time, 6LACK delivers six tracks exploring a number of themes from toxic relationships, the struggles of coming up in the music industry, and of course, love and relationships. This project further cements just how versatile of an artist he can be.
Even over the span of 20 minutes, 6LACK manages to give the listener a taste of everything on this project. We got braggadocious bars over a heavy-hitting trap beat on the Lil Baby-assisted cut, "Know My Rights." Two songs later, he provides a melancholy love song over a piano-laden instrumental that describes the struggles of finding love in quarantine. The highlight track on the EP, however, comes when 6LACK blends these two styles together into the perfect harmony between RNB and trap on "Long Nights." Here, he harmonizes with Dreamville's Ari Lennox on the hook, "Hopin' for a f**k around / Hopin' for a good time / Hopin' for a long night, pour up the drink / Wear Chanel, mami, you bad as hell." It's tracks like these that illustrate 6LACK's ingenuity and ability to challenge the sound of the RNB genre without erasing it altogether.
It's clearer than ever that 6LACK is at the forefront of the modern R&B wave, helping define the sound of the new school. If this EP is a taste of what's to come, we can expect a strong full-length project in the near future. Stream "6pc Hot" on all platforms and check out the official video to "Know My Rights" below.
