When it comes to artist backstories and the defining moments that have launched their careers, newcomer James Deacon has a bit of a different story to tell. A life-threatening accident that severed the tendons in his right arm meant that Deacon could no longer do what he loved- play his favourite instruments. But despite that setback, Deacon decided to continue pursuing his musical passion, releasing his debut single "Not Givin' Up" in a defiant response to all those who have tried to keep him away from his destiny.
Lucky for us that he did, because "Not Givin' Up" is an explosive track that instantly grabs you and never once lets go. The production evolves with you as you listen, transitioning vocal harmonies into animated percussions, taking a backseat to Deacon's verses before making a strong showing again with infectiously melodic keys. It's impressively layered with a very simple and relatable message, as explained by Deacon: "[It] is all about leaving the safety of a day job or desk job and pursuing my dream regardless of how hard it will be to get where I want to go. It's a big fuck you to all the bosses I've ever had and all the people who held me back or told me I wasn't good enough." We can expect to hear more of this brutal but refreshing honesty on Deacon's forthcoming debut EP, The Calling, as he continues to blaze a path of his own and inspire us all to join him.
