Unexpected pair SG Lewis and Clairo release "Better"— a modern disco bop

SG Lewis, the London-based producer and musician, is characterized by a fusion of sunny house and pop music that occasionally steers into other genres like techno and future bass. His infectious sound has led to collaborations with a range of popular artists including Gallant, Ta-ku, and as of this week, the adorable dream-pop singer Clairo. The collab is titled "Better," and the single stemmed from a chance writing session in Los Angeles with the two artists.

In the making of the track, SG “played Clairo the instrumental and she jumped on it straight away." Their chemistry on "Better" is apparent despite the unfamiliarity of the genre for Clairo, who called the track "one of the first real steps [she's] made into pop music." SG continues saying, "the process was so natural— I kept the beat unquantized from the jam as I felt like it gave the record an old disco feel." Both artists are ascending in their careers; SG has just released Dusk, which is one part of an ambitious three piece album series (each influenced by different genres), and Clairo released the well-received "diary 001" EP this year with features from Rejjie Snow and Danny L Harle. Keep an eye out for the music video for "Better"— although not officially announced, it's a likely bet judging from Clairo's tweet posted earlier today:

Earlier this year, SG Lewis began releasing music from his ambitious three-part album ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ that encapsulates one night out at the club. Referencing a wide breadth of styles and genres, ‘Dusk’ uses disco, west coast hip-hop and 80s electro to set the scene. Soon to move into Phase 2 – ‘Dark’ – SG Lewis will move onto heavier styles like techno and grime.
