Brighton 5-piece White Room has come out with their snappy new single "Twisted Celebration" from their upcoming double EP Eight, and we have your first listen here. The band has been keeping busy gaining a reputation for electrifying performances and playing festivals such as Isle of Wight, Reading, and Leeds, as well as releasing a steady stream of singles. They've also captured the attention of Paul Weller, Miles Kane, and Hedi Slimane in the meantime. This frenzy of activity has led to their signing with Deltasonic Records, on which their EP will be released. In keeping with this sublime ascent, the band is now setting off on their first headline tour in the UK.
"Twisted Celebration" is another example of this band's seemingly effortless knack for creating catchy songs that fuse the old with the new. At times it feels like you're listening to Arctic Monkeys, at others The Beatles, and at others Tame Impala, but all the while their own voice is the principal player. The song bears true to its title, giving off circus-y vibes – bright and colorful but with a nebulous undercurrent – that correspond with the idea of diving in to the outside world and embracing both its risks and rewards.
Lead singer Jake Smallwood's vocals are deceptively robust: elastic and buoyant, they are also capable of slinking smoothly down into their nether range. Meanwhile Josie McNamara's walking bass line sets up an animated foundation for all that's layered above it. And there's a lot layered above it, which is another of this band's achievements – their music is stacked like a perfect sandwich, where each flavor is distinct but also complementing the others. The song is successful horizontally too (imagine that this perfect sandwich evolves as you eat it), with its seamless transitions between stripped down moments that highlight Smallwood's voice and the psychedelic, soaring spirals that showcase the band's production chops.
Eight will be out on December 1st via Deltasonic Records.
