The Blaustone brothers, aka Blaus, released their debut EP, 'The Tone' last week on Tricycle Records with highlight "Give Up" as the lead single. The song dives down immediately in a shutter of electronic noise, only to raise back up with an anthemic piano melody. Vocals reminiscent of a hazed out Snow Patrol or Broken Bells kick in at 28 seconds, lending powerful, yearning emotion to the building beat. As the beat kicks and electronic drums are added, the piano turns to synthesizer, burning the catchy melody into the ears of listeners. The eclectic mix of sounds is hard to define, but the emotions behind them are not.
The song continues its long, slow burn by adding even more dreamy layers, vocally and instrumentally. More and more bass, drum, vocals and synthesizers vie for your attention before the song closes out. The track finishes where it starts, with an ear worm piano melody and foggy atmospheric noise. The vocals stick around until the end, leaving the listener with a haunting yet somehow uplifting feeling.
No word yet on if and when Blaus will be touring, but you can check out their new EP on Spotify and iTunes and listen to some of their other tracks on SoundCloud.
