Americana rock singer-songwriter Florence Dore is leaning on the past to craft a sound that is timeless as well as good. "Abacus" is an engaging 90s-style track that feels like something out of a time warp. It's hip with a little pep in its step that makes you move and groove over the dance floor. Dore does a fantastic job of not leaning too much into the past as she allows the track to breathe.
With Mark Spencer and Gene Holder in tow, Dore set out to make a record that doesn't take itself too seriously and makes a splash on the radio. Like Fleetwood Mac and other legends of their folk rock time, Florence Dore tells stories that capture and strike at the heart of the Americana sound. It's poetic and warm while making itself known for the new age.
For Dore, "Abacus" is more than a song; it's a guideline for navigating relationships.
“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to love and marriage,” says Dore. “There are no rules to a relationship. You can’t sit down with an abacus and figure out the math and logic of love. I’m married to a drummer who never went to college, and I have a PhD. Maybe that wouldn’t look good on paper, but we have a great relationship!"
"Abacus" is part of Dore's latest project, Hold the Spark, released May 1 via Propeller Sound Recordings. The 12-track album builds upon the stories of old and refashions them for the digital age. Dore manages to map a cross-country album that spans from the swamps of Florida to the wide open plains deep in the heart of America. Blending the 60s, 70s, and 90s under one project, Dore tells bedtime stories for those willing to listen.
