It's shaping up to be a big year for up-and-coming Japanese producer starRo. He's racking up quite the combination of quality releases these past months, ranging from singles, remixes, and an EP for Soulection. starRo himself is a multi-instrumentalist with a liking towards downtempo, hip-hop, and soul. With his latest release, he shows that he also has a taste for worldly genres as well.
In celebration for OutKast's reunion and headline booking for Coachella, starRo took the opportunity to remix and edit one of his favorite songs by them, "Prototype". As you probably already know, "Prototype" is a reasonably chill and majestic song in its own right. It's a very likable tune to begin with, converting casual listeners into loyal fans.
starRo completely re-imagines "Prototype". As you cue up the remix, you're blasted with groovy, bossa nova style percussion with sampled vocals from the original. After the initial minute, it dips into a smooth-yet-heavy beat with hints of the original tune sprinkled here and there. It's a creative remix utilizing heavy looped vocal samples along with other effects.
Take the ride below once more, except with more attitude. I think I'm in love again…
