For today's dose of dairy we here at EARMILK are bringing you a rather slick reworking of an already fantastic record. Little Brother's The Listening album is often heralded as a classic among hip-hop heads, and it marked the emergence of Phonte as one of the great MCs of the last decade and 9th Wonder as one of the true masters of soul production. There are few underground records held in higher esteem. The group has since disbanded but their debut still stands as a treasure of underground rap.
Phoniks, a soulful producer out of Portland, clearly identifies with the group as a torchbearer for all soul heavy hip-hop musicians, and he pays homage to Little Brother's incredible legacy with a remix of "The Way You Do It" from the group's first LP. The interpretation is quite different than the original, but it is deeply rooted in soul, and the instrumental fits the cadence and content of the verses perfectly.
