In the company of increasingly successful fellow Chicago MC’s, Chance The Rapper & Vic Mensa, you would expect Mick Jenkins to have a little something about him; you would be right to make this assumption. The emergence of yet another impressive artist from the 312 area seems to be mirroring New York’s current hip hop renaissance, of which has seen the likes of Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson and Dillon Cooper firmly at the helm.
For anyone unfamiliar with Mick Jenkins, “Cross Roads” is a fine introduction to an artist whose uncompromisingly solid flow and honest lyricism that floats somewhere between Scarface and Jay Electronica – a deadly combination, if ever there was one. Much to the credit of Ongaud, the soothing production on the track is beautiful and provides the perfect platform for collaborator Chance to display the type of lyrical skill that has got everyone so hyped – pay particular attention to Vic Mensa who goes in last and eats this one up to prove he is just as strong a presence in the Save Money collective.
The track can be found on his Soundcloud, so too can a link to his latest mixtape Trees & Truth, so do yourselves a favour and get acquainted.
