Schoolboy Q – "Yay Yay"

Schoolboy Q is often overlooked and underrated, due to the phenomenal success of fellow Black Hippy member Kendrick Lamar. The L.A native, however, can definitely hold his own in the current Hip Hop climate, and is respected amongst his peers, as his tour with A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown have proved. Musically, Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions (his previous two albums under independent label Top Dawg Entertainment), although they didn't break any sales records, were both popular amongst critics and fans alike.

Next up for Q, is his major label debut album. Signed to Interscope Records, Schoolboy Q started work on his album last summer. After much deliberation on what the title was going to be, he finally settled for Oxymoron, as well as confirming that he'd been in the lab working with the likes of Pharrell, Danny Brown and A$AP Rocky. So with the anticipation of the album growing, we finally got a look at what the album might sound like when Top Dawg Entertainment posted "Yay Yay" to their Soundcloud. With Boi-1da on the boards, the track has that typical Schoolboy feel to it with bangin' 808's and shuffling hi-hats, all dissected by cries of 'Yak Yak Yak', as heard on fellow TDE label-mate Kendrick Lamar's 2012 album Good Kid m.A.A.D City. After the success Kendrick had with his major label debut, Schoolboy Q will be hungry for his chance at success. If the rest of Oxymoron carries on in the same way "Yay Yay" has, then it's sure to be an album to look out for in 2013.
