Particularly in terms of club music, Portland is frequently regarded as a secondary market. Major headlining acts tend to prioritize the bigger cities, often playing weekend shows up north or down south, leaving Portland with midweek bookings, if they arise at all. That’s where the Secret Grove Collective comes in as a group dedicated to amplifying Portland’s underground dance music scene.
Secret Grove Collective was born out of a deep passion and vision, evolving over more than a decade. Founder Daniel Maloney traveled across the country, organizing underground music events in cities like Boston, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, and ultimately Portland. With the closure of several venues, the collective has stepped into the role of being Portland’s only public venue committed to house and techno. While there are a few other underground events across Portland, what truly makes Portland’s scene unique is the pop-up and renegade culture. During the summer, you can find a variety of underground, warehouse, and park events happening across the city, sometimes carefully planned, other times spontaneously. This grassroots energy is where the company first took shape, emerging from a small warehouse and renegade shows powered by a passionate community of music enthusiasts.
With a mission is to create a dependable, dedicated space for house and techno music in Portland. The founders believe it is within reach to offer a space where people can experience high-quality live performances any night of the week, whether it is a cocktail bar or a full-fledged music venue. What sets Secret Grove Collective apart is their commitment to accessibility. They also maintain a no-cover policy for resident nights, supporting the local music community. As artists themselves, they believe music and community should always be at the heart of the experience. In keeping with their origins, the Secret Grove strives to preserve the spontaneous, inclusive spirit of the pop-up events.
