Boomtown has always thrived on creativity, but its latest addition takes a purely scientific approach to the festival landscape.
Fresh off sweeping wins for “Large Festival of the Year” and “Tech Innovation of the Year” at the UK Festival Awards, the Hampshire event is leaning heavily into its new theme, Chapter 5: Radical Redesign, by turning its 77,000-strong crowd into a massive living laboratory.
The festival has officially unveiled The Observatory, an ambitious, women-led academic research hub integrated directly into the heart of the Matterley Bowl.
Directed by Dr. Martha Newson, a leading psychologist based out of Oxford and Greenwich universities, the hub will host live studies, workshops, and immersive experiments investigating exactly what happens to our brains and bodies when we experience live cultural events.

The concept is entirely unique to the UK festival circuit, marking a radical push against typical, sterile laboratory environments. Instead, Dr. Newson calls the initiative WILD research, meaning Worldwide, In situ, Local, and Distinctive.
By stepping away from isolated test groups, researchers from over ten UK universities will study collective human behaviour at a massive, natural scale. Festival-goers will have the chance to interact directly with wearable neurotechnology and real-time biometric data tools that translate internal emotional states into visual and sensory outputs.
Rather than sticking to rigid academic tracks, the programming hits on topics deeply rooted in electronic music and counterculture. The live studies and panels will focus closely on psychedelic science, dance and creativity, social connection, transformation, neurodivergence, and emotional regulation in event spaces.
"Labs can only take us so far," Dr. Newson explained while discussing the importance of public-facing science. She noted that "academia needs to wake up to the importance of meaningful, public-facing research and be far more willing to invite people in," adding that she is "especially proud that we initiated The Observatory as an all-women team, which, even now, still feels like something quite radical in STEM."
In the lead-up to the gate openings this August, Dr. Newson will also host a companion four-part podcast series. The episodes are set to tackle the inner workings of the festival brain, sleep patterns, psychedelics, and how inclusive event spaces are designed specifically for neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ communities.
While massive musical names like Skrillex, Four Tet, Faithless, and Ashnikko provide the heavy-hitting soundtrack for the weekend, The Observatory will be busy figuring out the actual science behind the magic.
Boomtown 2026 officially takes over the Matterley Estate in Hampshire from August 12 – 16, 2026.
