Johannesburg-based artist Shoka Sunflower marks the beginning of a new refined and deliberate chapter with his new single “Two Step,” in collaboration with genre-blurring producer Moo Latte. Built on breezy hip-hop grooves, airy guitar riffs, and relaxed vocals, sonically the track masks the underlying dull ache of its theme.
Written during a dark period in his life, the track is less about heartbreak itself and more about the spaces we create to avoid feeling it. Shoka explains, “I talk about this person I had idealized completely… but I never really deal with it, and that’s the point.” “Two Step” is the dance that we all put on to avoid reality, rather than facing it front on. We’ve all been there, trying anything to numb the pain and ignore the inevitable and this new single is a subtle reminder that we’re not alone, providing a quiet anthem for anyone who’s ever tried to outrun their feelings.
“Two Step” is off of an upcoming album titled, FOR NOW KEEP DANCING, which further emphasizes this idea of dancing around what we’re not ready to face. Shoka is here to let us know that we don’t always have to have the answers, sometimes it’s fine to just keep the beat going.
