Nigerian-artist, Falana, chooses "Joy" [Video]

"Joy" is the newest single and music video by Canadian-Nigerian artist, Falana and blends modern afrobeats and elements of R&B. The sunny single's message is about counting your blessings through hurdles of life and the optimistic energy through all of the smiles, dancing, and colors certainly has us all doing so.

Following up her December single, "Teletele", "Joy" is Falana's first single of 2021 and released as an independent artist. Born and raised in Toronto, she has now gone back to living in her parent's hometown of Lagos, Nigeria. Produced by Kingbnjmn, the song draws influence from Falana's cultural heritage and features a mellow afrobeat melody full of dance-floor ready rhythm. You can very well hear the traditional Yoruba music influence in her vocal cadences as she carries a soulful flare along each line, akin to a Mary J. Blige or a Estelle.

“It is crazy the song was first written two weeks before the entire world went into lockdown. And over the last 10 months, the sentiment/lyrics of the song surface all the time in everyday conversation, on the news, social media, literally everywhere," she tells EARMILK. “It’s special. It almost feels like the song was birthed right at the perfect time that the world needed it. So I am excited for it to finally be released into the world and really heal, connect, encourage or do whatever it is that it’s supposed to for anyone who hears it!”

Falana's a multi-linguist being fluent in English, Spanish, Yoruba, as well as some French. But that's not all she's multifaceted in. Musically, Falana drummed the bucket growing up but now is able to play guitar, keyboard, guitar, and cajón.  There are beautiful scenes in the accompanying music video of her drumming on the Cajon.
