So often in American history, great pain has led to beautiful artistic expression. It would be nice to rid our society of issues like racism and police brutality, and hopefully one day we finally will, but in the meantime, artists like Brittany Campbell are there to offer musical depictions of strife that make us reflect and continue the movement forward toward a better tomorrow. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter, producer, and actress known for her work with the Metropolitan Opera at a younger age and later gracing the Broadway stage with productions like Hamilton has delivered a gorgeous new protest anthem inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, simply titled “Matter.”
It’s clear that Campbell put her heart and soul into “Matter,” having written, co-produced, and even contributing to the powerful animation to accompany the music. At the forefront of the track, though, are Campbell's stunning vocals that gracefully soar through the mix with passion and vulnerability against warm, delicate harmonies as her lyrics question the tenets of freedom in country where we can’t always trust our neighbors. Her refrain of “We want to breathe again” is particularly powerful on multiple levels when one thinks about the racial injustices that have taken place even in the past few months.
Along with her mesmerizing performance on “Matter,” Campbell has vowed to contribute all the proceeds of the track to organizations like Abundant Beginnings and Sista Afya Community Mental Wellness, cementing her place as a leader in the movement and a powerful voice that needs to be heard.
