Watch out for Audrey Powne. The versatile and superbly talented Melbourne native has been making waves in Australia and beyond with groups like Leisure Centre, Au Dré as well as features on Brownswood Recordings’ Sunny Side Up compilation and touring alongside The Teskey Brothers. Ready to step out as a solo artist. the trumpeter and vocalist is set to release her debut EP Bed I Made later this summer. In the meantime, she has graced the airwaves with the project’s first single entitled “Taboo.” Powne recently relocated to New York City where she has been working on the EP with in Brooklyn with producer Tariq Khan, and with “Taboo” as the first taste, Bed I Made figures to be one to remember.
While Powne’s immense skills as a performer are unquestionable, her latest work shows that her confidence as a composer and front person is in full blossom. Built on a haunting repeated bass line, “Taboo” features an absorbing groove with striking melodies, exquisite vocal harmonies, and dexterously soulful horn parts mixed in throughout as she sings about a young woman dealing with the loss of innocence from being caught in a love triangle. With the supreme musicianship and original style displayed on “Taboo,” Audrey Powne’s music will soon make listeners around the globe take notice.
