Brooklyn-based dreampop duo Widowspeak just released new music for the first time in three long years. “Money” is the second single from the upcoming album, following the track “Breadwinner” which was released in late May. Singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas set out to make a statement with these singles and it's depicted in the “Money” music video, which they directed themselves. In a recent press release, Hamilton shared, “we get so caught up in seeking some sort of return on investment that we ignore the damage we inflict (on people, on ourselves, on the planet).”
Compared to “Breadwinner” – a reflective track filled with synths and reverb – “Money” is structurally simple, combining a hypnotic guitar riff with velvety vocals as Hamilton repeats, “money doesn’t grow on trees.” Her voice glows through as the guitar rhythmically builds into a strum. The song gives off an almost tangible ‘90s dreampop feeling but we’re quickly brought back to the present time; as we hear the lyrics “what a time to be alive” we are reminded just how relevant the words are now more than ever.
Both tracks seem to touch upon a greater, overarching theme – we can only expect it to be expanded upon in the full record, Plum, set to release on August 28 via Captured Tracks.
