D12's Kuniva and Swifty McVay recently joined forces to record a collaborative project My Brothers Keeper and hit us with the first single off the project. The song in question is a nostalgic tribute song titled "My Why" and features vocalist MRK SX on the hook while Kuniva and Swifty dive into the ups and downs of their 20 years plus career. Although the subject matter has a solemn, bittersweet feel, the backdrop used to convey these feelings is pretty upbeat but doesn't take away from the heartfelt lyrics. Swifty McVay starts off by recounting the good old days from rapping on the corners to the world tours, videos and seemingly endless love from fans and families. As all good things go, things changed especially when Proof died and so-called friends showed their true colors leaving McVay wondering where all the love went. Kuniva follows suit and shares his disdain and disappointment at folks who put him everywhere except their prayers. He details folks who tried to take advantage of his fame and quickly showed them the way out with the quickness. All in all, "My Why" put things in perspective for the Detroit legends who have seen it all and have matured from young emcees to established acts.
The video for "My Why" goes full circle by splicing early footage of D12 and Eminem in different situations. From studio sessions, concerts, hotels and then some, the video brings back memories from the past capturing the youthful exuberance of the group and for the most part the fun side of things. What also makes this video special is it was directed by the late Proof's first son Deshaun Rice.
