With his unorthodox approach to bass music, Alec Bonnici is a familiar face at underground hotspots throughout Sydney and a master in the studio. The Australian bass house producer just made a powerful debut on Tchami's Confession imprint with Rude Boy EP.
Title track "Rude Boy" is voluminous in its delivery. It features everything we expect from a good bass house record: merky tension, crunchy saws, and rip-roaring basslines. However, Bonnici surprises the listeners by placing ethereal female vocal chops and progressive melodies in the bridge, blending a hard-hitting undertone with brooding riffs throughout. It is an ear-ringing display of unpredictable arrangement. His collaboration with Faux, "Sweat Box," on the other hand, offers dark carnivalesque vibe to savor. Throughout the track, a raft of gritty glitchings heave and rustle in the heavy low-end. Bonnici and Faux's mastery of grooving, bass-driven club music is on full display here.
