Anyone who checked out Wu-Lu’s S.U.F.O.S. EP from earlier this year knows that the South London producer and multi-instrumentalist lives in an artist realm of his own making. While the heady, genre-bending EP, which is an abbreviation for “Save Us From Ourselves,” was released in April, he has since dropped a video for the title track. Directed by George Barber, the new visuals feature a montage of Wu-Lu’s life, underscoring the diversity and resilience of his community referenced on the EP.
The song begins in an intimate musical space with only guitar, bass, and vocals in the mix providing ample moments in between the sparse, thought-provoking lyrics for heartfelt, VHS-quality shots of family and friends. Wu-Lu brings in a crackling drumbeat in the latter part of the song and the video consequently expands its scope to feature shots of the larger community. The lack of lyrics in the song’s outro draws attention to the sprawling montage as well as fellow Londoner Nubya Garcia’s winding, soulful saxophone solo. Wu-Lu’s aesthetic pushes boundaries and the “S.U.F.O.S.” video shows that his expansive artistic vision is not limited to the musical realm.
