Anyone who listened to The O’My’s album Tomorrow last year knows that the Chicago-based duo have a wholly original sound of gently thumping grooves, falsetto vocals, and an engagingly minimal aesthetic. Singer and guitarist Maceo Haymes and keyboardist Nick Hennessey have spent over a decade together making music with various band members before ultimately arriving as The O’My’s with Tomorrow. The duo is back at it this spring with the new single “Don’t Know Better,” which comes from a forthcoming EP due out this summer.
The track begins with some typical O’My’s soul goodness with dreamy guitar harmonies providing the foundation for some sweet, affected vocals from Haymes. The sparse music soon elevates to another level, though, with increasingly bombastic instrumentals, punctuated by some tasteful drum fills and majestic horn lines. Haymes mostly lays out on the vocals in the latter part of the song, creating an outro that showcases the group’s musicianship and instrumental chops. In a music world saturated with soulful love songs, The O’My’s continue blazing trails with unmatched style on “Don’t Know Better.”
