Anyone familiar with Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings probably knows that the “Brownswood Basement” sessions have produced some incredible performances from diverse artists in an intimate setting. As a sort of U.K. counterpart to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, the cozy basement studio has hosted legends in the industry as well as notable up-and-comers including Roy Ayers, BADBADNOTGOOD and Moonchild. The latest session features the upstart Blind MIC, a soulful vocalist from Manchester who brings with him a live band for a rendition of the tune “Meant Well.”
Blind MIC shows off his personal lyric writing on this track with some introspective words about a difficult relationship, culminating at the end of the hook when the band stops and he sings, “I did more than I care to mention but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” His band provides a relaxed yet edgy performance through the stylistically varied track, with crackling drums, dreamy chords, and a fiery saxophone solo. Blind MIC is well on his way to ascending in the music industry and with this killer band and a debut album called Love & Retribution on the way in 2019, there’s no telling how far he’ll go.
