Combination earth angel/celestial witch/gypsy woman Florence Welch and her band Florence + The Machine are back with a brand new single and video "Sky Full of Song."
It's been a long time coming. But my god, this was worth the wait. The first track released since 2016, "Sky Full of Song" is stripped and bare, a clear deviation from the booming How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. Instrumentation is minimal so as not to detract from her otherworldly vocal. The video, directed by AG Rojas, is cut from the same cloth: black and white, simple, slightly abstract, and full to the brim with vibrant imagery that remains exquisitely unpretentious and down-to-earth.
On Twitter, Florence said of the track: "There is this feeling of being cracked open, rushing endlessly outwards and upwards, and wanting somebody to hold you still, bring you back to yourself. It's an incredible, celestial, but somehow lonely feeling." In an early interview and attempt to explain her unique sound, Welch once spoke about how she felt that music should be all-consuming, something that swallows the soul. It is no wonder then, that the lyrics on "Sky Full of Song" speak in absolutes and extremes: Florence is all at once drowning, flying, reaching. She is exhausted but energized, melancholy yet happy. She is firmly rooted in the ground while forever gazing upward at the heavens.
