Indie pop chameleons WALK THE MOON have been around for a minute now, bringing their unique and eclectic blend of dance vibes and pop hooks to the masses. From "Anna Sun" to "Shut Up And Dance", the band has carved a space for themselves in the zeitgeist that seems to fit them quite nicely. They released a new album, What if Nothing, last year and have plans to tour with the likes of 30 Seconds to Mars, MisterWives, and Joywave. Nicholas Petricca, the band's frontman, answered some questions for me ahead of their UK tour which starts this week.
Last fall's What If Nothing saw a change in pace for the band. "'What If Nothing' is the rawest, emotional, and futuristic music we've ever made," Nicholas says. "The band was on the brink of breaking up, my father was very sick, and yet we persevered to come back together and make this music as an expression of what we were going through. It couldn't have been made without those experiences, and it's a much deeper more exciting record because of it."
The songwriting process on What if Nothing allowed for further exploration of what the band had accomplished in their songwriting capabilities and allowed them to build even further upon it. Nicholas states, "I have always been fascinated with the human voice as an instrument. On our new song "Sound Of Awakening" we sampled bits of my voice, distorted them, and played them thru my synthesizer to make really strange otherworldy sounds. I'd love to do more of that."
